Sinopsis:

The most successful film of 1985 was the science fiction classic, Back to the Future. Many baby boomers will remember this fun movie and the fascination with its premise - what would happen if you went back and accidentally did something that changed the future as you knew it. It's an age-old concept, but director Robert Zemeckis did a great job with it.

An interesting take on the concept though is how living in the future measures up to personal perceptions of it from the past. In other words, is the world you live in today anything at all like the world you envisioned when you were twenty? It's a relative question of course because if you are twenty-two now, it's likely that your perception of what life would be like two years ago is probably pretty accurate.

But if you're a baby boomer, the answer is probably a lot different. For a myriad of reasons, a large number of boomers are finding themselves today in a future that they simply did not predict several decades ago. Sure, time changes everything, but over the last few years, everything changed a lot.

For one thing, the whole notion of retirement has been replaced by a concern for overall financial security. It's funny, but as the boomers worked their way through their careers, we never really thought of it in so many words. We were more focused on that big day, when there would be a little gathering in the office, maybe we'd accept a token of gratitude from our employer, and that would be it. We'd never have to commute again, we'd only go to meetings of the volunteer groups that we belong to, and life would be good.

Along the way we hired financial planners whose job it was to make sure that we invested our money properly, and purchased stocks frequently enough to ensure that they would enjoy a steady stream of commissions from our investments. Of course when the market crashed (several times over our working careers) we were always told to ride out the storm, to take advantage of adversity, to buy when the market is down and then to keep buying. This is why today, so many of us have retirement portfolios that might allow us to live comfortably for a couple of years but definitely not for a couple of decades.

It's almost like the kid in college who is so focused on getting a degree that they overlook what they will be doing for a job for the rest of their lives. (Many boomers made that mistake along the way as well.) But there we were, thinking about retirement, but not about financial security. At least we weren't thinking about it enough.

Here we are today then, back to the future. We're retired, or almost so, and finally we are now focused on financial security. Hey, better late than never, right?.

If you find yourself in this situation, take heart - all of the tools you need to enjoy complete financial security are already at your fingertips. What you first need to do though is to acknowledge that financial security is not only your quest, but your personal responsibility as well. Once you've taken this first step, you've begun taking action and you will get wherever you decide to go. The key is to take that step. Well, what are you waiting for?
